What Makes an East Perry Sheepskin Rug Different
Here's something most people don't realize: the vast majority of sheepskin rugs sold online are chrome-tanned. Chromium salts, heavy metals, the whole thing. It's fast, it's cheap, and it produces a hide that's been completely stripped of its natural lanolin. Those hides get dyed to cover up the uneven color (because without lanolin, the leather looks rough) and then finished with formaldehyde-based coatings. In a product photo? Sure, they look fine. Under your feet, against your skin, in a room where your kids play on the floor? Totally different story.
Our hides come from families we've worked with for years in Poland and a variety of other areas in Europe and Eastern Europe. The sheep are free-range, mountain-raised, and the pelts are byproducts of the local meat industry. Tanning happens with lactic acid (a bio-based acid, gentle on the leather), and the lanolin stays in. That's a big deal. Lanolin is what makes sheepskin naturally self-cleaning, resistant to dust mites, and able to regulate temperature the way synthetic fibers simply can't. Hospitals have used medical-grade sheepskin for pressure sore prevention for decades because of these properties, and the benefits translate directly to what you feel at home.
Choosing the Right Size
Quick thing to know: sheepskin rugs aren't measured like woven rugs. Each pelt has its own natural shape, so dimensions are always approximate. No two pieces are identical, and that's part of what you're getting.
Our area rugs are multi-pelt configurations sewn together for real floor coverage. The plush ivory area rug works as a bedside piece, a reading nook anchor, or a living room accent, depending on your layout. The mixed textured rugs are larger, combining four to six pelts, and they can hold down a seating area or stretch along a hallway.
If you're somewhere between "I want a single throw" and "I need a full area rug," take a look at our quad sheepskins (four pelts) and sexto sheepskins (six pelts). They drape over furniture beautifully and lay flat on the floor just as well.
Styling Ideas
One thing we love about sheepskin as a material: it grounds a room without fighting for attention. Layer one over hardwood or tile and the space immediately feels warmer, softer, more inviting. Throw one across the end of your bed. Use it as a meditation seat on the floor. There are a dozen ways to style a sheepskin rug depending on the room, and most of them take about thirty seconds.
And the colors? All natural. Our ivory pieces range from bright cream to a warm golden white; it depends entirely on the animal. The mixed-texture rugs layer curly wool with straight wool in tones from caramel to silver. Every single rug looks a little different. That's the whole point.
Who These Rugs Are For
Parents who are building a non-toxic nursery or play space and don't want synthetic off-gassing anywhere near their kids. Homeowners who've had it with decor that looks nice but doesn't actually do anything for the room. Anyone who's ever Googled VOCs in household textiles and felt a little horrified by what they found.
Sheepskin's lanolin + keratin fiber structure creates a surface that's warm in cold months, cool in summer, and genuinely calming underfoot. There's a reason we built an entire wellness collection around this one fiber. It does that much.
Taking Care of Your Rug
Thirty years. That's how long a naturally tanned sheepskin rug can last you with basic upkeep. Shake it out once a week or so. Brush the wool with a wire pet brush (the kind you'd use on a golden retriever works great) to keep things fluffy. Spot clean with a damp cloth and a little mild soap. Keep it out of direct sunlight for long stretches, because that'll dry the leather side out over time. We have the full breakdown on our product care page, plus a step-by-step deep clean walkthrough in our care guide.
One thing: your rug will have a natural scent when it first arrives. That's the lanolin. It's a good sign, and it fades within a few days. Same goes for small natural variations in color, texture between pelts, or tiny marks on the leather backing. Those aren't flaws. That's how you know it's real and undyed.
Sheepskin Rug FAQs
Are sheepskin rugs safe for babies and children?
Absolutely. We tan without chrome, formaldehyde, or synthetic dyes, so our sheepskin rugs are safe for nurseries, tummy time, play mats, all of it. Lanolin is a natural antibacterial and the wool fibers resist dust mites on their own. Check out our full babies + kids collection for sizes made specifically for little ones.
How long does a sheepskin rug last?
With proper care, 30 years or longer. It comes down to tanning: chrome-tanned hides lose their natural oils during processing, so they dry out and degrade faster. Our bio-based tanning keeps the lanolin and collagen structure intact, which is what makes the leather stay soft and resilient decade after decade.
Do sheepskin rugs shed?
A little, yes, especially in the first couple weeks with longer-wool styles. It settles down fast once you brush it a few times. A wire pet brush does the trick.
Where are East Perry sheepskin rugs made?
The hides come from free-range sheep farms in the mountains of Eastern Europe and get tanned locally by artisan families we've partnered with for years. East Perry itself is woman-owned, based out of Asheville, North Carolina.
Can I use a sheepskin rug on heated floors?
Yes! Sheepskin regulates temperature naturally, so it pairs well with radiant floor heating. The one thing to watch out for: don't leave it sitting directly on a heat source above about 100°F for extended periods. That kind of sustained heat can dry the leather out over time.
What's the difference between your area rugs and your quad or sexto sheepskins?
Area rugs are sewn into defined shapes for dedicated floor use, with pelts arranged for consistent coverage and clean edges. Quad sheepskins and sexto sheepskins follow the natural contour of each pelt, so they have an organic, freeform shape. That makes them versatile: lay them on the floor, drape them over a sofa, use them as a bed cover. Different look, same quality.
